A focused business degree built around work.
Waterloo’s Accounting and Financial Management program is a direct-entry Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management. Unlike a broad general-management degree, AFM starts at the intersection of accounting and finance, then adds analytics, technology, leadership, and business decision-making.
Every AFM student follows co-op and must complete four work terms. Alternating study and work makes the pathway longer than a conventional four-year degree, but gives students repeated opportunities to test careers and build experience before graduation.
AFM is strongest for students seriously considering accounting, finance, analytics, or related professional careers—and who want structured co-op to be a central part of university.
Three prerequisites and individual selection.
Ontario applicants need an OSSD with at least six Grade 12 U or M courses. The current published admission range is the mid-80s, based on prior years; actual competitiveness changes with the applicant pool and available spaces.
- EnglishAny Grade 12 U English, with a minimum grade of 75%.
- Advanced FunctionsMHF4U, with a minimum grade of 75%.
- Calculus and VectorsMCV4U, with a minimum grade of 75%.
- Helpful—not requiredWaterloo recommends Financial Accounting and Data Management as useful preparation, but says they do not affect admission likelihood.
Applicants may apply to AFM or Sustainability and Financial Management, but not both. Other Waterloo financial-management programs may still be selected separately.
Waterloo currently lists February 1, 2027 as the application deadline and February 15, 2027 as the document deadline for most programs. Check AFM-specific instructions and your applicant portal because required items can change.
Do not rely on old AIF advice.
Waterloo’s current supplementary-forms page explicitly says the general Admission Information Form is not used for AFM or SFM. Older articles and student discussions may still describe an AIF or an earlier AFM Admissions Assessment, so they should not be treated as current instructions.
- The general Waterloo AIF is not used for AFM
- Your applicant portal is the authoritative checklist
- Grades and prerequisite minimums remain essential
- Deadlines and requested documents must be met
- Whether a separate SAF assessment appears
- Whether it affects admission, scholarships, or both
- Its exact format, fee, and submission deadline
- Any requirements unique to your applicant category
Waterloo’s SAF scholarship page still references a SAF Admissions Assessment for scholarship consideration. Because the public pages are not fully aligned, follow the personalized checklist Waterloo sends after you apply and contact SAF if anything is unclear.
Build the core, then shape a career pathway.
Learn the language
Begin financial reporting, finance, business value creation, problem-solving, analytics, and leadership.
Connect study and work
Deepen the business foundation and complete early co-op terms that inform later choices.
Specialize
Use 13 electives and at least one career specialization alongside remaining work terms.
The published AFM options include Professional Accountant, Business Analytics, Financial Markets, Entrepreneurial Mindset, and Financial Leadership. Waterloo notes that delivery of these options changes for students beginning in Fall 2026, so incoming students should use their cohort’s sequence and degree checklist.
The Professional Accountant specialization is designed to meet CPA prerequisite education requirements. The Financial Markets specialization includes courses covering the CFA body of knowledge. Completing a degree does not itself award either designation; each professional body has further requirements.
Four required work terms—not four guaranteed dream jobs.
AFM students must complete four co-op work terms and four professional-development credits. Waterloo assigns students a work/study sequence, with limited approved alternatives, so calendars differ from schools that follow uninterrupted September-to-April study years.
Multiple recruiting cycles let students test roles, build skills, and improve applications over time.
Students can use Waterloo’s recruiting platform and employer network while also conducting their own search.
Co-op jobs are normally paid and can offset costs, but earnings vary by role, employer, location, and term.
Students apply and interview for roles; admission to AFM does not guarantee a particular employer, industry, or placement.
Co-op affects housing, travel, friendships, extracurriculars, and summer plans. Treat the alternating schedule as a lifestyle choice as well as a résumé benefit.
Accounting is a strength, not the only outcome.
AFM can lead toward public accounting, audit, tax, corporate finance, banking, capital markets, analytics, consulting, risk, entrepreneurship, and other business roles. The program’s structure is especially useful when a student wants to test several of these through co-op before committing.
Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance holds CPA accreditation for several programs, and AFM participates in the CFA University Affiliation Program. Students interested in the CPA pathway can also investigate Waterloo’s separate Master of Accounting, which has its own admission rules and costs.
Professional requirements change. Always verify course, grade, examination, work-experience, and membership rules directly with CPA Ontario/CPA Canada or CFA Institute.
First-year estimates do not show the whole degree.
For students starting September 2026, Waterloo estimates Ontario domestic AFM tuition and incidental fees at about $9,000 for two academic terms, plus approximately $1,500 for books and supplies. The international estimate is about $58,000 plus books. Waterloo explicitly warns that accounting and finance tuition is significantly higher in upper years.
Co-op students currently pay an $836 fee per school term for a program-dependent number of terms. Tuition is not charged during co-op work terms, but students still need to budget for housing, relocation, commuting, interview clothing, and periods between paycheques.
Waterloo and SAF list entrance scholarships, awards, bursaries, OSAP or other government aid, and co-op earnings. Exact eligibility and application requirements vary.
