01 · OVERVIEW

What makes this program different?

Allard’s professional JD starts with 32 credits of required first-year courses, including Indigenous Peoples and Law, advocacy, legal research and writing, and core public- and private-law subjects.

Upper years total 60 credits and combine required subjects with electives, a research component, and experiential learning through clinics, moots, externships, or approved skills-based courses.

THE SHORT VERSION

Allard is a strong option to explore for students who want rigorous common-law study, required experiential learning, Indigenous legal education, and a major West Coast university environment.

The application should make academic readiness and thoughtful motivation visible. Treat previous medians as context, not as a target that predicts a decision.

04 · PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Foundation first. Direction next.

The curriculum combines a broad first-year base with upper-year requirements, choice, research, and practical learning.

BEFORE LAW

Complete eligible university study

Build the academic record, LSAT preparation, writing, and experiences needed for a professional-law application.

Study contracts, criminal law, property, torts, public law, Indigenous peoples and law, advocacy, and legal research and writing.

YEARS 2–3

Complete 60 upper-year credits

Meet required-course, research, ethics, and experiential expectations while selecting advanced legal subjects.

The JD requires at least 92 credits in total.

Students who began under current rules must complete an approved experiential course or program before graduation.

05 · EXPERIENCE

Practical learning is a graduation requirement.

CLINICS

Serve clients and organizations under supervision through business, Indigenous, criminal, community, or other clinical offerings.

EXTERNSHIPS

Learn in legal workplaces while connecting practice with structured academic reflection.

MOOTING

Develop research, written advocacy, teamwork, and oral argument through competitive moots.

EXPERIENTIAL COURSES

Use negotiation, trial advocacy, solicitor work, and other approved courses to practise professional skills.

Planning point

Specific clinics, moots, and externships have applications, prerequisites, and capacity limits. The requirement guarantees an experiential component—not a particular placement.

06 · CAREERS

Turn the degree into a direction.

Graduates pursue legal practice, government, business, public interest, policy, research, and other roles after completing any required professional licensing.

Vancouver access may support regional networking, but location does not guarantee employment.

Students interested in a particular practice area should combine courses, experience, mentorship, and licensing research rather than expect a formal major.

07 · COST & FINANCIAL AID

Budget the complete experience.

Use UBC Allard’s current costs-and-funding page. Budget tuition, student fees, books, application and LSAT costs, Vancouver housing, food, transit, travel, and post-graduation licensing.

IMPORTANT

Vancouver living costs can be a major part of the decision. Compare scholarships, bursaries, savings, expected borrowing, and the entire three-year budget.
