01 · OVERVIEW

What makes this program different?

Queen’s JD is a professional law program entered after university study, not directly from high school. It combines foundational legal study with advanced courses and practical learning.

Students can explore clinics, moots, pro bono work, journals, public-interest internships, international opportunities, and combined degrees. The Kingston setting creates a more campus-centred experience than a downtown law school.

THE SHORT VERSION

Queen’s Law suits students who want a close law-school community, broad common-law study, and substantial experiential options in a traditional university setting.

02 · ADMISSION

Understand the academic threshold.

First-year applicants must meet Queen’s current university-study eligibility and submit the required OLSAS materials, including academic records and LSAT results.

  • University studyComplete at least the current minimum of recognized full-time undergraduate study before entry.
  • LSATSubmit an official LSAT score that meets the cycle’s timing rules.
  • OLSAS applicationProvide transcripts, autobiographical information, and the personal statement.
  • ReferencesArrange the reference letters required for your applicant category.
  • Applicant categoryReview General, Indigenous Peoples, Black Student Applicant, Access, and other current rules.
Admission note

Queen’s publishes competitive indicators for the General category, but they are not guaranteed cutoffs. The committee considers the full file and applies category-specific criteria.

03 · APPLICATION

Use the personal material to add context—not repeat a résumé.

Applications are submitted through OLSAS. Queen’s uses academic evidence, the LSAT, personal statements, references, and other required material to assess readiness and contribution.

WHAT IS CONFIRMED
  • OLSAS application
  • Official undergraduate transcripts
  • Official LSAT results
  • Personal statement and autobiographical sketch
  • Required references and supporting documents
HOW TO PREPARE
  • Verify your category and its criteria
  • Choose referees early
  • Explain why experiences matter
  • Track the live November deadline
  • Keep a complete financial plan
EverythingBusiness perspective

A competitive number does not make an application complete, and a published threshold does not promise admission. Strong applicants connect academic readiness, judgment, motivation, and lived experience in a coherent file.

04 · PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Foundation first. Direction next.

The JD builds a first-year legal foundation and then opens into advanced subjects, practical experiences, and interdisciplinary options.

BEFORE LAW

Complete university preparation

Develop strong academic, research, writing, and reasoning skills and learn what professional licensing requires.

YEAR 1

Build the legal foundation

Study core common-law subjects, legal research and writing, public law, and the methods of legal analysis.

YEARS 2–3

Choose and apply

Combine advanced courses with clinics, moots, journals, internships, exchanges, pro bono work, or combined-degree study.

Queen’s offers several combined-degree possibilities, each with separate admission, sequencing, and graduation requirements.

Students should use the current academic calendar for precise course and credit rules.

05 · EXPERIENCE

A close community supports substantial learning beyond lectures.

QUEEN’S LAW CLINICS

Work for credit, as a summer student, or as a volunteer across business, family, elder, poverty, and prison-law services.

MOOT COURT

Develop research, writing, teamwork, and oral advocacy through competitive simulations.

PUBLIC INTEREST & PRO BONO

Support community organizations and legal-access work through placements and student initiatives.

INTERNATIONAL OPTIONS

Explore approved exchanges and international study opportunities under current program rules.

Planning point

Experiential and international opportunities can be selective, time-intensive, and subject to change. Confirm eligibility, cost, dates, and credit before building a plan around them.

06 · CAREERS

Turn the degree into a direction.

The JD can support private practice, government, public interest, business, policy, research, advocacy, and other legal or law-adjacent careers after any required licensing.

5Queen’s Law Clinics

The degree does not guarantee a job or confer a licence to practise law.

Students should investigate practice areas through coursework, clinics, informational interviews, summer work, and honest reflection on lifestyle and debt.

07 · COST & FINANCIAL AID

Budget the complete experience.

Use Queen’s current tuition, student-fee, housing, and financial-assistance pages. Add books, LSAT and application costs, living expenses, travel, and later licensing costs.

IMPORTANT

Kingston can support a campus-centred experience, but moving and housing are still significant. Compare the complete three-year cost and available aid.

08 · EVERYTHINGBUSINESS PERSPECTIVE

Who might thrive here?

A STRONG FIT IF YOU…
  • Want a close law-school community
  • Prefer a traditional university campus
  • Value clinics, moots, and public-interest options
  • Want broad common-law study
  • Will engage actively beyond class
THINK CAREFULLY IF YOU…
  • Want direct high-school entry
  • Need a downtown Toronto setting
  • Assume published competitive indicators guarantee entry
  • Need a particular clinic guaranteed
  • Have not planned for licensing after the JD
THE BOTTOM LINE

Queen’s Law combines a close Kingston community with broad academics and meaningful experiential options. It should be compared with other leading programs on personal fit, cost, location, curriculum, and career direction—not treated as part of a fixed ranking.
