Ivey begins after two years.
The Ivey HBA is not a standard direct-entry four-year business program. Students spend their first two university years in another program, then typically enter Ivey for Years 3 and 4. High school applicants can receive Advanced Entry Opportunity status: conditional pre-admission that must be maintained.
Ivey says about 75% of its HBA class previously held AEO status; the remainder enter from Western or other recognized universities after two years.
Ivey is suited to students who want two years to explore another academic field, followed by an intensive business education centred on cases, discussion, teamwork, decisions, and communication.
Two applications, two decisions.
High school students first apply through OUAC to any eligible program at Western, Huron, or King’s and indicate their intention to apply for Ivey AEO. They then submit a separate Ivey AEO application. Western admission and AEO status are separate decisions.

Ivey’s current live page explains the process but does not display a current AEO deadline. Do not copy a date from an older cycle. Verify the deadline in the official application portal and admissions page.
Leadership receives equal weight.
Ivey states that AEO decisions weigh academics and leadership experience equally. The current application overview includes non-academic awards, activity essays, additional activity entries, references, and a mandatory video interview.

Use your essays to prove depth. Explain the challenge, the decisions you personally made, how others were affected, and what you learned. A long title list is weaker than two experiences examined honestly and specifically.

Ivey’s primary teaching approach is the case method. The school says students work through more than 300 real-world cases, preparing decisions before class and defending their reasoning through discussion. HBA students join a section of roughly 77 classmates and work extensively in learning teams.
Students may also pursue combined-degree paths with disciplines such as engineering, medical sciences, economics, computer-related fields, arts, and law. Many combined degrees add an additional year, and requirements vary.
AEO is conditional—not guaranteed admission without further work. The current handbook governs progression. Historically highlighted requirements include an 80% two-year average, at least 70% in Business 2257, continued extracurricular involvement, and other course/load conditions. Always use the handbook for your entering cohort.
Participation is part of the education.
Frequent preparation, discussion, cold participation, and defending decisions make communication central to learning.
Students move through HBA1 in a section and complete demanding team assignments, including time-compressed reports.
HBA2 students can apply for exchange; Ivey reports options across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and other regions.
Case competitions, consulting projects, entrepreneurship, student leadership, and real-client work extend learning beyond class.
Recruiting is intense and structured.
Career Management is integrated into HBA1 and supports exploration, applications, interviews, networking, and recruiting strategy. Ivey does not present the HBA as a formal co-op program, but students commonly pursue summer work between HBA1 and HBA2.

Frequent paths include consulting, financial services, technology, consumer products, accounting, entrepreneurship, and general management. The program’s recruiting reputation is valuable, but outcomes still depend on performance, experience, preparation, and market conditions.
The upper years cost substantially more.
Because Ivey is a 2+2 program, students first pay the tuition associated with their Years 1–2 Western program. For 2026–27, Ivey lists Ontario-resident domestic HBA tuition and fees of $25,704 in each of HBA1 and HBA2, before ancillary fees, course materials, living costs, and other expenses. Fees are subject to approval and change.
Ivey also lists additional mandatory ancillaries and substantial digital case-material costs. Students comparing programs should budget the full four-year pathway—not only the first two years or base tuition.

Ivey’s 2+2 structure, case method, cohort model, and career ecosystem make it genuinely different from most Canadian business programs. That difference is the advantage for the right student—and the reason applicants should evaluate learning style, cost, and pressure carefully.
