01 · OVERVIEW

What is this career, really?

Sales professionals help customers evaluate and purchase a product or service. Business-development roles may focus on new markets, strategic partnerships, commercial opportunities, or programs that attract investment and economic activity.

Titles overlap heavily. An account executive, partnership manager, sales-development representative, and economic-development officer can have very different work. Job Bank groups business development officers with market researchers and analysts under NOC 41402.

THE SHORT VERSION

Good sales is not pressure for its own sake. It is disciplined discovery, communication, follow-through, and matching a real need with a valuable solution.

02 · THE WORK

What people actually do.

The work usually combines preparation, direct conversations, documentation, internal coordination, and repeated follow-up.

RESEARCH

Identify industries, organizations, decision-makers, market changes, and problems that may justify a conversation.

DISCOVER

Ask questions, listen, qualify fit, understand decision processes, and determine whether the offer can create value.

PROPOSE & NEGOTIATE

Explain the solution, handle objections honestly, coordinate pricing or contracts, and negotiate workable terms.

MANAGE RELATIONSHIPS

Maintain records, forecast pipeline, support handoffs, strengthen accounts, and learn why opportunities advance or fail.

Reality check

Rejection, targets, delayed decisions, and unpredictable timing are normal. Poor organizations can reward aggressive short-term behaviour; strong ones value customer fit, accurate forecasting, and durable relationships.

03 · ROUTES IN

No single degree guarantees entry.

Job Bank says business-development officers typically require a bachelor’s degree in economics, commerce, business administration, or public administration. Many commercial sales roles use different NOCs and may accept varied education plus relevant industry knowledge.

EARLY SALES

Learn the process

Begin in retail, fundraising, customer service, sales development, campus partnerships, or an entry-level account role.

INDUSTRY

Build credibility

Learn a sector such as technology, financial services, healthcare, real estate, manufacturing, or professional services.

PARTNERSHIPS

Think strategically

Develop market research, negotiation, financial reasoning, proposal writing, and stakeholder-management skills.

Some roles require licensing, especially in regulated financial, insurance, or real-estate products.

Certifications can help in specific fields, but clear performance evidence and customer judgment usually matter more than a generic sales certificate.

04 · PREPARATION & RECRUITING

Build evidence, not just interest.

Employers look for communication, resilience, organization, commercial curiosity, and evidence that you can create momentum without misleading people.

BUILD THESE SKILLS
  • Listening and questioning
  • Writing and presentations
  • Negotiation and objection handling
  • Pipeline organization and forecasting
  • Industry and customer knowledge
USEFUL STUDENT ACTIONS
  • Lead sponsorship for a student event
  • Fundraise for a credible cause
  • Practice discovery interviews
  • Write a partnership proposal
  • Track outreach and learn from results
EverythingBusiness perspective

Avoid treating charisma as the whole job. Preparation, ethical judgment, accurate notes, consistent follow-up, and knowing when a prospect is not a fit are durable advantages.

05 · PAY & LIFESTYLE

Read compensation carefully.

Job Bank’s NOC 41402 wage data covers business development officers, market researchers, and analysts—not every quota-carrying sales position. Variable compensation can make total earnings more volatile.

$69.23Canada high hourly wage*

Job Bank wages were updated November 19, 2025 using 2023–24 reference data. Commission, bonuses, territory, industry, sales cycle, and seniority can materially change compensation.

Hours can be regular in some inside-sales roles and irregular in travel-heavy, event-based, enterprise, or closing-period work.
